BARCELONA

cASA MERCADO

FALL 2021

Made during a semester abroad in Barcelona, we were challenged to consider Barcelona's history and urban fabric in order to reinvigorate this area of the city that lies along the banks of the Besos River.

The proposal at hand includes a marketplace, harking back to the Cerda Plan which included markets at regular intrevals to maintain a level of supply and health within the city. Additionally, this includes around 90 residential units, varying between studio apartments to three bedroom units. This reflects the variety of the residents in the area, from young creatives to family units being attracted to the area due to the school density and the more accessible cost of living.

The shape of the building creates courtyards for public activity and creates vantage points for viewing the river in the residencies.

The roof of the marketplace creates a path and green roof for the residents to explore at a distance from the main public areas.
